Mother's Day 2013 will soon be here but like most of us, we can't actually recall when it is exactly. So, when you type in "When is Mother's Day 2013?" you'll get the reply: "Mother's Day 2013 is on Sunday 10th March 2013".
Mother's Day, 'Mother Day' or 'Mothering Sunday' as it can be called, is a moveable date in the calendar but it is always on the fourth Sunday in Lent which is halfway between Shrove Tuesday & Good Friday. Since Lent starts at different times during the year, this means that Mother's Day will move as well, just to keep us guessing! But whenever it is and whatever you do, don't forget Mother's Day!
Best thing to do is log in to HelloTurtle.com and open an account. You can then put in all your special dates to remember on your Account diary page so you'll always be reminded of those special occasions when you need to send a personalised card from HelloTurtle.com
It's a time when Lent can be given up for one day to make a special point to celebrate with our Mums. And what a great time to surprise our Mums with those special gifts! Originally gifts were taken to Mums on Mother's Day by their children who had gone to work as domestic servants. These children were given the day off to visit their Mothers with gifts of chocolate and cake. Thankfully, not many children are sent out to work at such a young age nowadays but it would be nice if you helped with the washing up and took the dog for a walk to appreciate your Mum for everything she does for you.
Strangely enough, our Mother's Day celebrations have no connection with American Mother's Day which celebrates Mother's Day in May. This is unusual since we often adopt American celebrations. This is the case with Father's Day which was celebrated in America first and then we adopted the idea of a celebration to honour Dads. At one time there were two different celebrations - Mothering Sunday, to honour your Mother, and when Christianity spread, it changed to a day to honour Mother Church. After a time, the two celebrations were merged together so that we had one day to respect Mothers and honour the Church. That's why there are special services in Church on Mothering Sunday.
