What is Hanukkah

Hanukkah (also known as Chanukah, Chanukkah or Chanuka) is the Jewish Festival of Lights. It dates back to 2nd century BCE and is celebrated in November or December (in 2013 this Jewish holiday falls on Wednesday, 27th November and ends on the evening of Thursday, 5th December). The very word, Hanukkah, means rededication and celebrates one of the greatest miracles in Jewish history, the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem at the time of the Maccabean Revolt.

How Hanukkah is celebrated

Hanukkah is celebrated by kindling one candle on the Hanukiah (an eight-stemmed candelabrum) each day. Lighting of the candles symbolises how God looked after the Jewish people during difficult times.

Some of the rituals are family-based and others are communal. Special additions to the daily prayer service and blessings after meals are also observed.
