What is Kwanzaa

This African American and Pan-African holiday is celebrated by millions between 26th December and 1st January each year. Kwanzaa in short, is a celebration of family, community and culture - the three values that best reflect African thought and practice. Its ideology is based on seven core principles (Nguzo Saba): Unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith. Kwanzaa was created by Maulana Karenga.

How Kwanzaa is celebrated today

During Kwanzaa families decorate their households with objects of art themed around colourful African clothes, such as kente and fresh fruits which represent African idealism. Children also take part in the Kwanzaa celebrations during which they give respect and gratitude to their ancestors. For non-African Americans who celebrate Kwanzaa, use the holiday greeting - "Joyous Kwanzaa". A candle-lighting ritual, artistic performances and finally a feast (karamu) are also observed during the Kwanzaa holiday.
